A grand jury in Texas began its deliberations yesterday in retrial of the “Holy Land Foundation,” the charity accused of financing the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), the largest trial of its kind in the United States. The case, falling under “war against terrorism” affects the association, suspended from work since the events of 9/11, which is based in Texas and is accused of sending more than $12 million to “Hamas”.
Following the incapacity of members of the jury to reach a verdict, the U.S. Department of Justice undertook in October 2007 the retrial of five of the association’s officials. Prosecutors say that the association collected more than $12 million for Hamas; they do not accuse it of “directly financing terrorism or of being involved in terrorist operations,” but of “strengthening Hamas and aiding this movement in financing its criminal activities.”
Prosecutor Barry Jonas said in front of members of the jury, that “Hamas considers the United States a source of liquidity." "We don’t want our country to be used as a support for terrorists”, he added. Whereas the defense attorneys confirmed that the association did not support the Hamas movement, it only collected subventions for the Palestinians, the main reason for the prosecution of their clients is their family ties: Khaled Machaal, head of the Political Bureau of Hamas, is a relative of Mufid Abdel Kader, one of the accused.
