Bush: Neither Wilson Nor Roosevelt

Rio de Janeiro: George W. Bush loves to repeat that he is a "war president," as if he were a Franklin Roosevelt or a Woodrow Wilson. Incidentally, Roosevelt and Wilson entered into wars that already involved a good part of the world. Bush, with his past as a semi-deserter in Vietnam, invented the Iraqi war under false pretexts - the infamous weapons of mass destruction, which did not exist.

His other supposed war is also pure fantasy - the "global war on terrorism," which serves to frighten Americans, leaving them in a permanent state of fear.

And it is curious what happens on one of these fronts of this "war" in Afghanistan and Pakistan. On Sunday, The New York Times brought more information, based on stories from former residents of the region and U.S. and Pakistani authorities. [From the N.Y. Times].

[Editor's Note: The author refers to missile attack by a CIA drone in a tribal area of Pakistan on January 13, in an attempt to "take out" Osama bin Laden's deputy, the Egyptian Ayman Al-Zawahiri. The missile attack missed Zawahiri, but killed 18 others, some of them women and children. [From Pakistan].

This is nothing new. Local [Pakistani] militants, with assistance from al-Qaeda operatives, assumed control of tribal areas, gaining a certain control over the population through a mixture of fear and religion (which is not that different from what Bush does in the U.S.). According to the newspaper, there are a great number of delinquents, including al-Qaeda leaders, Afghan "warlords" and local militants. In other words, the situation is exactly the same as it was before the Bush invasion.

Nem Wilson e nem Roosevelt

Rio de Janeiro: George W. Bush adora repetir que é um "presidente em guerra" - como se fosse um Franklin Roosevelt ou um Woodrow Wilson. Roosevelt e Wilson, aliás, entraram em guerras que já envolviam boa parte do mundo. Bush, com seu passado de semidesertor na do Vietnã, inventou a do Iraque, sob falsos pretextos - as fantasiosas armas de destruição em massa, que não existiam.

A outra suposta guerra dele também é pura fantasia - a "guerra global ao terrorismo", que serve para amedrontar os americanos, mantidos em permanente estado de medo. E é curioso o que acontece numa das frentes dessa "guerra", no Afeganistão e no Paquistão. Domingo o "New York Times" trouxe mais algumas informações, com base em relatos de ex-residentes da região e autoridades dos EUA e do Paquistão.

Não há grande novidade. Militantes locais, com assistência de operadores da al-Qaeda, assumiram o controle de áreas tribais, ganhando certo controle sobre a população a partir da mescla de medo e religião (o que não é táo diferente do que faz Bush nos EUA). Segundo o jornal, há uma espécie de galeria de delinqüentes, incluindo líderes da al-Qaeda, "warlords" afegãos e militantes locais. Ou seja, uma situação exatamente igual à existente antes da invasão de Bush.
