With a Wink and a Nod, U.S. Approves of the Iranian Bomb

Is it possible that that Washington has tacitly given the go-ahead to Iran to build its nuclear bomb? According to this article from the Tunis Hebdo of Tunisia, just as the U.S. let Pakistan have the bomb to keep India from embracing the USSR too strongly, it is ready to sign off on an Iranian atom bomb, with security guarantees for Israel. All of this worries the oil-rich Gulf States, who fear the now almost inevitable arrival of the 'Shiite Crescent.'

[Editor's Note: Readers should keep in mind that while it is Shiite, Iran is NOT an Arab country. The Iranians are Persian [], who see themselves as utterly distinct from the Arabs. This difference, while in recent history often papered-over, characterizes the history and relations between Iran and Arabic Muslims. For the purposes of this article, references to Shiites or the 'Shiite Crescent,' are references to Iran, or an 'Iranian-crescent'].

The whole world has been in a tumult since Iran's fiery President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, solemnly announced that Iran was joining the very exclusive eight-member club of nations possessing nuclear technology … as though anyone expected otherwise. This isn't rocket science, the country's atomic quest has been an open secret. Among others, three years ago, I wrote in this very column an analysis entitled: "Americans choose the Shiites."

This imbroglio of the "Khomeinist atomic bomb" - while the entire Arab world frantically awaited the "Saddamist bomb" - dates back about 15 months to when the [Iranian] mullahs revealed the truth of their technological capacities, the U.N. threatened economic sanctions, and the U.S. threatened selective air strikes by 2007, just before the end of Bush’s term. In all the confusion, ordinary mortals have only glimpsed the tip of this sordid iceberg …

For several months, secret contacts have regularly taken place between Teheran and Washington, and indirectly with Tel-Aviv. Because, as astonishing as it may seem, the United States has decided to offer the Shiites the possibility of making their bomb, just as in a previous era, the U.S. "authorized" Pakistan to have its own. Back then, the purpose was to create a balance of terror with India and persuade it not to throw itself completely into the arms of the late Soviet Union.

[To be permitted to develop its bomb], all Iran must do - Iran, which would never attack Israel just to please those "poor" Palestinians - as long as it stops parading its mastery of the uranium enrichment cycle  - is offer the necessary guarantees to ensure the invulnerability of the Zionist State. This would avoid continuing the empty, never-ending discussions in foreign ministries. After all, has Pakistan ever sought to attack Israel?

Yes, Pakistan's bomb was indeed made by Pakistani brains, but only thanks to the generous largess of Gulf State Sunnis. But didn't these same Sunnis finance the outrageously destructive and unfair eight-year war against the "turbaned? [Iran-Iraq War ]" Today, we have a double blowback. Am I am simplifying things too much here? Because this is kind of subtle, actually it is quite complicated.

-- Iran must take revenge on the Arab countries in the Near East, and especially Sunnis. This is an animosity that has existed since the first Caliphates of Islam [since the days of Mohammad, 1385 years ago, 1385 being, incidentally, the Iranian year].

-- Misfortune has also been the driving force behind Bush, the master of the White House - after his country, the world's first hyperpower, was humiliated [on 9-11] by about 20 harebrained Sunnis (to my knowledge, there was not a Shiite or Kurd among them) - in taking great revenge which has aided Iran, to the detriment of all Arabs [remember, Iran is Persian, not Arab].

And this is not an expression of defeatism. Far from it. For every Arab country will have to endure the American "reaction" for several decades! Just take a look at Japan and Germany. They have been occupied militarily for the past 60 years, and it's still going on … the Shiites [led by Iran] will be the great winners and the undisputed masters of the entire Gulf - unless the unfortunate Arabs can pull themselves together in an unprecedented

way. Iran will be a true regional power that we will have to take into account!

About the "Khomeinist bomb," let’s say that in the past, Washington had already pushed the Shah toward nuclear research. And Israel supplied Teheran with sophisticated weapons during the Iraq-Iran conflict, leading to the memorable "Iran-Contra Gate "…

[Editor's Note: During the Reagan Administration, the White House's desire to outmaneuver Congressional restrictions on aid to the Nicaraguan rebels - the contras - drove it to sell weapons and spare parts to Iran, and give the proceeds to the contras. [].

What is worse is that the Iraqi Shiites, both civilian and military, all obey Teheran. Apparently, they are "more Iranian than the Iranians. [See Video Below]" The Iranians, who are their chief advisers, have gone as far as to order them not to set up a government, so that [President] Ahmadinejad could maneuver as much as possible. This is all the more true, with almost 150,000 [American] Boys as good as prisoners of their former allies [the Iranians], in the event a major conflict erupts between Iran and the United States. Because it's impossible to predict how things will turn out. Strategically speaking, change is a permanent fixture. Today, Bush and Ahmadinejad may well be on the "same side," that is, the anti-Sunni side, but depending on the situation, things could go quite differently at any moment.

Which means that on the day Iran has or is about to have the atomic bomb, and even more so, the essential delivery systems to launch it, anything could happen. But mainly, all will depend on - and this cannot be emphasized enough - the concessions and guarantees that Iran makes to Israel. It will also depend on the docility of Arab countries, mostly Sunni, who are the great oil producers, toward Uncle Sam, who has been damaging them ever since 9/11.

As ever, we must recognize that the Arab-Muslim world presents far from a brilliant picture. It is currently falling apart. It is disintegrating from within: civil war in Iraq, killing between Shiites and Sunnis in Pakistan, turmoil among Egyptian Copts, Sudan divided into several pieces, riots in Gaza [between Hamas and Fatah] due to a lack of submission to the new power [Hamas], rifts between Lebanon and Syria, etc…

So, has the time of the "great Shiite crescent" actually arrived? It isn’t a surprise, but it is coming, and it is coming fast, thanks to and because of George W. Bush, who has been deaf to the injunctions of right-thinking people, even to those connected to his own ex-president father.

And unless something unforeseeable and implausible happens, the future of the [Persian] Gulf is perilous. The entire region could plunge completely in one direction or the other …

"On ne livre pas de bataille quand on n'a pas de troupes"

Le monde entier est en ébullition depuis l'annonce solennelle par le fougueux président Mahmoud Ahmadinejad de l'entrée de l'Iran dans le club si fermé des huit pays nucléaires, comme si personne ne se doutait de rien.Pourtant, la quête de l'atomique par ce pays est un secret de Polichinelle. Nous avons écrit de notre part sur ces mêmes colonnes, entre autres, une analyse datant de trois ans intitulée: "Les Américains ont choisi les Chiites".

Et dans cet imbroglio de la "bombe atomique khoméiniste" —alors que le monde arabe a attendu éperdument la "bombe saddamiste"—, de sa date de mise à feu par les mollahs (on parle de quinze mois), de leurs capacités technologiques réelles, des éventuelles sanctions économiques onusiennes, voire des frappes sélectives US d'ici 2007, la veille de la fin du mandat de Bush, dans tout ce branle-bas, le commun des mortels ne perçoit que la partie émergée de cet iceberg… sordide.

Depuis plusieurs mois, des contacts secrets ont lieu en permanence entre Téhéran et Washington et indirectement avec Tel-Aviv.Car, aussi étonnant que cela puisse paraître, les Etats-Unis ont opté pour donner l'occasion aux chiites de faire à leur tour leur bombe, tout comme ils ont "autorisé" le Pakistan à disposer de la sienne. Il s'agissait, à l'époque, de faire établir l'équilibre de la terreur avec l'Inde et de la persuader de ne pas trop se jeter dans les bras de la défunte URSS.

Pour le cas de l'Iran —qui n'attaquera jamais Israël pour les beaux yeux des "pauvres" Palestiniens— il lui suffit de fournir les garanties indispensables à l'invulnérabilité de l'Etat sioniste pour que les vaines palabres se poursuivent inlassablement dans les chancelleries, sans toutefois trop tenter d'étouffer l'entreprise d'enrichissement de l'uranium iranien.D'ailleurs, le Pakistan a-t-il un jour pensé nuire, d'une manière ou d'une autre, à l'Etat hébreu ?

Pourtant, sa bombe a été conçue, certes, par des cerveaux pakistanais mais grâce aux bourses déliées des sunnites des pays du Golfe. Ces mêmes sunnites n'ont-ils pas financé outrageusement une guerre ravageuse et injuste, huit longues années durant, contre les "enturbannés" ?Aujourd'hui, c'est un double retour de manivelle.Et ici, je schématise ma pensée, car c'est un peu subtil, voire assez compliqué.

— L'Iran a une revanche à prendre contre les pays arabes du Proche-Orient, particulièrement les sunnites.Une animosité qui règne depuis les premiers khalifats de l'Islam.

— La malchance a voulu, aussi, que Bush, le maître de la Maison-Blanche —pour avoir vécu l'humiliation de son pays, la première superpuissance mondiale, par un groupe d'une vingtaine de jeunes écervelés sunnites (à ma connaissance, il n'y a parmi eux aucun chiite et aucun Kurde)— ait la même grande revanche à prendre que celle de l'Iran au détriment des Arabes.

Et ce n'est guère du défaitisme, loin de là, d'avancer que les pays arabes dans leur ensemble subiront la "fronde" de l'Amérique durant plusieurs décennies d'affilée ! Regardez le sort réservé au Japon et à l'Allemagne.Ils sont tous deux occupés militairement depuis soixante ans et ça se poursuit toujours…

Les chiites seront —si par mégarde les Arabes ne parviennent pas à se ressaisir pour éviter, autant que faire se peut, de si "magistrales" bévues— les grands gagnants et les maîtres incontestés de tout le Golfe.Une vraie puissance régionale avec laquelle on comptera !

Pour en revenir à la "bombe khoméiniste", disons qu'au passé, Washington a, déjà, poussé le Shah dans la voie de la recherche nucléaire. Israël, de son côté, a fourni à Téhéran de l'armement sophistiqué lors du conflit irako-iranien, d'où la mémorable affaire de l'"Irangate"…

Le plus grave c'est que les chiites irakiens, civils et militaires, sont dans leur totalité sous les ordres de Téhéran.Ils sont, paraît-il, "plus iraniens que les Iraniens".Ces derniers, leurs premiers conseillers, ont été jusqu'à leur imposer de ne pas former un gouvernement afin de permettre à Ahmadinejad de manœuvrer au maximum, d'autant plus que près de 150 mille Boys peuvent se sentir, à tout moment, prisonniers de leurs alliés d'hier en cas d'un grave différend irano-américain. Car on ne sait jamais comment vont tout à fait évoluer les choses.Il y a toujours des variantes quoique, "stratégiquement" parlant, Bush et Ahmadinejad soient, aujourd'hui, dans le "même camp", celui des anti-sunnites. Toutefois, les événements peuvent évoluer autrement, en fonction de la conjoncture du moment.C'est-à-dire, le jour où l'Iran aura ou sera sur le point d'avoir sa bombe atomique et surtout les vecteurs indispensables pour son lancement. Alors tout peut se produire.Mais, tout dépendra surtout —et on ne se lasse pas de le répéter— des concessions et des garanties faites à Israël.Tout dépendra, aussi, de la docilité des pays arabes, pour la plupart des sunnites, grands producteurs de pétrole, à l'égard de l'Oncle Sam qui ne cesse de leur nuire depuis les drames du 11-Septembre.

Déjà, il faut reconnaître que le paysage du monde arabo-musulman est peu reluisant. Il est actuellement en débandade.Il est fort miné de l'intérieur : guerre civile en Irak, tuerie entre chiites et sunnites au Pakistan, coptes égyptiens en effervescence, le Soudan fracassé en plusieurs morceaux, émeutes à Gaza avec une insoumission en prime montée contre le nouveau pouvoir, déchirement entre le Liban et la Syrie, etc.Dès lors, l'heure du “grand croissant chiite” a-t-elle vraiment sonné ? Pas étonnant, du moins elle est inéluctablement en marche, et à grands pas, grâce ou à cause du bon vouloir de George W.Bush, insensible, jusqu'ici, aux injonctions des bien-pensants, y compris celles de son propre père d'ex-président.

Et à moins d'imprévus toujours plausibles, tout peut arriver au Golfe. Tout peut basculer dans un sens comme dans l'autre…
