Bush 'Demonizes' Palestinians While 'Exonerating the Torturer'

Shocking-atrocious-unsupportable. The images of
butchery in Gaza break one's heart because of their barbarity and extreme
cruelty. In the prize list for horror, Israel has long taken the lead, and the
cold-blooded carnage last Friday, committed by Tsahal [Israeli Defense Forces]
– "the army of peace!" – against the family of 10-year-old Houda
Ghalya, is merely a "point of detail" in the vast catalogue of crimes
committed by the Hebrew State over the past 60 years.
The
repression and cruelty being committed against the Palestinians has reached
heights never before seen. Every day brings a new batch of dead and wounded,
destroyed homes and devastated fields. The blockade of towns and villages
starves a population confined to misery and suffocating in far-flung, isolated
"enclaves." Cruel treatment, torture - including children and women
(according to a report from Harts) - assassinations of those in charge and
humiliation at check points demonstrate the martyrdom of an entire population
abandoned by the international community and left to its fate.
"Israel
has the right to defend itself," contends George Walker Bush, without even
blushing. By adopting this theory, the White House Chief knows he is strangling
the truth. He demonizes the victim and exonerates the torturer. The resistance
of the Palestinian people to Israeli invasion is depicted as abject terrorism,
while the state terrorism practiced by Israel over the past 75 years is
considered self-defense and perfectly justified.
The
policies of Ehud Olmert, the heir of Sharon, and the policies of George Bush, agree on every point. The first
destroys, kills and humiliates en masse; the second - the great protecting
Godfather - covers up for and justifies the acts of the first. A programmed
extermination executed under the cover of legitimacy provided by the nation
that is supposed to be the "the keeper of justice and morality" … It
would be hard to improve upon such coordination.
Since his
arrival in power, George Bush Jr. has bound the fate of his country up with
that of the Hebrew state to the point that American values and interests have
become cemented to Israel's unspoken agenda. None of his predecessors ever
demonstrated such an unconditional and unlimited commitment to the benefit of
this State; a situation that has finally begun to worry Americans themselves.
A recent
study undertaken by U.S. scholars Stephen Walt and John Marshier [
]
has sounded the alarm. In this report, entitled "The Israeli Lobby and
U.S. Foreign Policy," both professors ask, "Why has the United States
been willing to set aside its own security in order to advance the interests of
another state?"
The
theory stands opposed to current American reasoning that the terrorist threat
has brought Israel and the U.S. closer. For the two university professors,
"the United States has a terrorism problem in good part because it is so closely
allied with Israel, not the other way around."
The
authors of the report draw the conclusion that in reality, Israel is a
"strategic burden" for the United States in its campaign against
terrorism; and they quote Israel's principal leaders who have all had recourse
to terrorism, from David Ben Gordon, through Yitzhak Shame, Men him Begin and
HUD Bark, who all became Prime Ministers after long careers as terrorists
(Stern, Hagan …). This study was released with a bang in the United States; but
no publication has dared endorse its conclusions for fear of being labeled
anti-Semitic, because any criticism of Israel is automatically condemned under
this label.

While
America's staunchly pro-Israel position no longer astonishes (89 U.S. vetoes
against resolutions condemning Israel!), Europe's attitude is disconcerting.
The unnerving white-washing of over 40 years of evidence leaves one perplexed;
and reduces Europe to the rank of fading power with no real voice on this
matter. But what happens on its southern flank should be of the greatest
interest to Europe, since at stake is not only the destiny of the southern
Mediterranean countries, but Europe's own security, stability and development.
But
perhaps this is too much to require from others when the defeatism of the Arab
World itself is absolute, and when the main actors - the Palestinians - are preparing themselves for civil war.

Choquantes-Atroces-Insoutenables. Les images de la boucherie de Gaza fendent le cœur par leur barbarie et leur extrême cruauté. Dans le palmarès des horreurs, Israël s'est adjugé depuis longtemps la
première place; et le carnage perpétré, vendredi, de sang-froid par «Tsahal» —l'«armée de la paix»!— contre la famille de Houda Ghalia, n'est qu'un «point de détail» dans le lourd dossier des crimes perpétrés par l'Etat hébreu tout au
long de ces soixante dernières années.
La répression des Palestiniens culminent à des cimes inégalées. Chaque jour leur apporte son lot de morts et d'invalides, de maisons détruites et de champs dévastés. Le blocus des villes et des villages affame une population confinée dans la misère, étouffant dans des enclaves éparpillées, isolées, coupées les unes des autres. Les mauvais traitements, la torture
—y compris celle d'enfants et de femmes (selon un reportage de «Haartez»—, les assassinats de responsables, les humiliations aux «points de contrôle»... illustrent le martyre de toute une population lâchée par la communauté internationale et abandonnée à son propre sort.
«Israël a le droit de se défendre», prétend George Walker Bush, sans rougir. En épousant cette thèse, le chef de la Maison-Blanche sait pourtant qu'il tord le cou à la vérité. Il diabolise la victime et innocente le bourreau. La résistance du peuple palestinien à l'occupation israélienne est qualifiée de terrorisme object et aveugle, alors que le terrorisme d'Etat pratiqué par Israël depuis trois quarts de siècle est considéré comme de l'auto-défense légitime et parfaitement justifiée.
La politique d'Ehud Olmert, «illustre» héritier de Sharon, et celle de George Bush se rejoignent en tous points. Le premier saccage, tue et humilie en masse; le deuxième —grand parrain protecteur— laisse faire et justifie. Difficile de
faire mieux en matière de
coordination entre une extermination programmée et une couverture de légitimation par une puissance supposée être «gardienne du droit et de la morale»...
Depuis son arrivée au pouvoir, George Bush Jr a scellé le sort de son pays à celui de l'Etat hébreu, au point
de confondre les valeurs et
les intérêts de l'Amérique avec les objectifs inavoués d'Israël. Aucun de ses prédécesseurs n'a fait preuve, comme lui, d'un engagement sans
condition et sans limite d'une aussi surprenante ampleur au profit de cet Etat. Chose qui a fini par inquiéter les Américains eux-mêmes.
Une enquête récente, menée par deux universitaires US, Stephen Walt et John Mearsheimer, tire à ce sujet la sonnette d'alarme. Dans cette étude intitulée «le lobby israélien et la politique étrangère des Etats-Unis»,
les deux professeurs soulignent que «les Etats-Unis confondent trop souvent leur intérêt national avec celui de l'Etat juif au risque de compromettre leur sécurité». La thèse prend le contre-pied du raisonnement aux Etats-Unis selon lequel la menace terroriste a rapproché Israël et l'Amérique. Pour les deux universitaires, si les Etats-Unis ont un problème de terrorisme, c'est «en bonne partie parce qu'ils sont alliés à Israël,
non pas l'inverse».
Les auteurs du rapport en viennent à la
conclusion qu'en réalité, Israël est une «lourde charge» pour les Etats-Unis dans leur campagne contre le terrorisme, et citent les principaux dirigeants d'Israël qui ont tous eu recours au terrorisme, depuis Ben Gourion en passant par Iszhak Shamir, Menhim Begin, et Ehud Barak devenus tous trois Premiers ministres après une longue carrière de terroristes (Stern, Hagana...). Cette étude a déclenché beaucoup de bruit aux Etats-Unis; et aucune publication américaine n'a osé en rendre compte de peur d'être accusée d'antisémitisme, car toute critique de la politique israélienne est automatiquement condamnée sous ce label.
Si la position foncièrement pro-israélienne des Etats-Unis n'étonne plus personne (89 véto US contre des projets de résolution condamnant l'Etat hébreu!), l'attitude de l'Europe, elle, déconcerte. Elle déroute par l'incroyable effacement dont elle fait preuve depuis près de quarante ans et qui la ravale au rang d'une blême puissance, sans voix réelle au chapitre. Ce qui se passe à son flanc sud, devrait l'intéresser pourtant de très près. Il concerne sa sécurité, sa stabilité et son développement, et pas seulement la destinée des pays du sud de La Méditerranée.
Mais, c'est peut-être trop demander aux autres quand, dans le Monde arabe, le défaitisme est total; et que les principaux intéressés —les Palestiniens— se préparent à la guerre civile...
